I became a Sunday school teacher because we needed teachers so badly they were willing to have me. To be honest, I wanted to sign up as a substitute teacher, but as the former Christian education director cried that she really needed teachers, I knew I could do this. I have never regretted moving my Sunday school hour down to the children’s floor. Learning the lessons was the most difficult part for me so I let myself stumble and learn with my children. My goal became not to teach the lesson perfectly but to let each child feel loved and accepted by me and by our church. Over the years, learning the lessons has become easier but how I address every class is the same — this is a safe place to learn in your unique way and to be loved.
I have now been teaching over nine years and I enjoy playing on the floor with my students since my kids think they are too old for that. If I have taught your child, I want to thank you for the commitment of bringing them each Sunday and trusting me with them as their teacher. The lessons were rarely perfect but they were taught with love. I know Lara Greene is always looking for new teachers and I hope you open yourself to the possibility of joining me on the children’s floor.
