The Reverend Karen Vannoy will preach on Sunday, June 14th.
Vannoy was appointed District Superintendent in the Desert Southwest Conference in 2012. Previously, Karen and her co-pastor husband, Dr. John Flowers, served as pastors of FUMC of Phoenix from 2007 – 2012. Prior to moving to Pheonix, Vannoy and her husband served as co-pastors of Travis Park UMC in San Antonio, Texas. Rev. Vannoy is no stranger to First Church where she served as Associate Pastor from 1981 until 1984.
Rev. Vannoy is known for her training of pastors in family systems and training on sexual harassment policies and procedures. She has led numerous events and retreats on Spirituality and the Body.
In 2012, Dr Vannoy and her husband chose to retire so they could devote themselves full time to teaching, writing and consulting. They have written numerous articles together, as well as three books: Not Just a One Night Stand on homeless ministry, 10 Temptations of Church on hidden incentives for church decline, and Adapt to Thrive, a look at change in the church.
John has been serving churches for 39 years, and Karen has been under appointment for 35 years. Their retirement to Austin, Texas has given them the blessing of being close to their children and grandchildren.
