United Methodist Women

Spiritual growth, leadership development, transformative education, and service and advocacy

About UMW

United Methodist Women (UMW) is the only official organization for women within the United Methodist Church (UMC). Founded in 1869, it is “the largest denominational faith organization for women with approximately 800,000 members”. UMW offers all women opportunities for spiritual growth, leadership development, transformative education and service and advocacy. Its current advocacy priorities are climate justice, economic inequality, maternal and child health, and ending criminalization of communities of color and mass incarceration. At First UMC, UMW is focusing on Maternal Health.

United Methodist Women (UMW)

For almost 150 years, United Methodist Women members have been in mission to women, children, and youth down the street and around the world.

The Purpose of United Methodist Women states that:

The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose Purpose is to know God, to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ, to develop a creative, supportive fellowship, and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.

Membership is open to any woman who indicates her desire to belong and to commit herself to the Purpose.

At First UMC, United Methodist Women members gather on a regular basis and are involved in a variety of mission projects. We

  • Raise money for the United Methodist Women-founded Montopolis Friendship Community Center and regularly volunteer at MFCC
  • Provide dinner once or twice a year for students at the Wesley Foundation at UT
  • Conduct mission studies
  • Participate in the Reading Program
  • Sponsor a cookie-decorating table at First Church’s annual community Easter egg hunt
  • Participate in the annual Texas UMW Legislative Event
  • Develop and support other ministries as needed

Members gather from time to time in a unit meeting. Much of the creative, supportive fellowship of United Methodist Women happens in monthly circle (subgroup) meetings. Click here for further information about each of the circles.

United Methodist Women support mission through regular, voluntary giving. Until we have the capability to receive contributions online, please mail your mission gifts to Unit Treasurer, Caroline Jones (8100 Marble Ridge Dr, Austin, TX 78747).

If you’d like to learn more about the work of UMW, about becoming a part of this fellowship yourself, or about starting a new circle or new ministry, please contact Sandy Wilder, UMW president, at swilder@texas.net.
