Dear First Church Family,
We have decided to carry on with worship and all activities as normal today at FUMC! Hurricane Harvey is still with us, and he will let us know of his presence throughout the morning with additional rainfall and gusts of wind. Even so, we will gather as the Church to remember and proclaim that God is also present with us (and far more persistent than any storm)! Today is the second week in our series, “Square One: Reframing the Basics of Faith.” Worship will be held at 9:00 and 11:00 a.m., with Sunday School at 10, as usual. Our Administrative Board will meet as planned at 12:15 p.m. in the Great Hall of the Family Life Center.
Please use good judgment. If roads in your area aren’t safe, stay home! But if the route to church is clear and you are ready to get out of the house, see your FUMC family, and lift prayers for all those who are suffering due to this and other storms of life, then I will look forward to gathering with you Downtown, “Under the Dome.”
If you feel compelled to make a financial gift to support those affected by Hurricane Harvey, you may do so by giving to the Rio Texas Conference Disaster Response Fund at https://riotexas.org/give or you may give through the United Methodist Committee On Relief (UMCOR) at www.umcor.org. We anticipate taking a special offering designated for UMCOR relief efforts next Sunday, September 3rd.
Finally, as you continue through these stormy days and lift up those most affected, join me in praying this prayer:
Merciful God, when the storms rage and threaten to overtake us, awaken our faith to know the power of your peace. Deliver us from our fear and ease our anxiety. Help us to endure the time of uncertainty and give us strength to face the challenges ahead. Give us the assurance of your presence even in this time, so that we can cling to your promise of hope and life shown to us through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

God’s Peace be with you!
