Every Thursday morning at 6:30 a.m. in Garrison Chapel is Feed My People Worship Service where 20-25 of our breakfast guests stop by for worship. Cathy Stone is the pastor and I’m sort of her “Thursday guy.” This service is normally a highlight of my week.
I’m frequently impressed by the Biblical knowledge of some, inspired by the testimony of others, and awed at those who say they are blessed. Some fond memories include one young black man who referred to me as “my brother” at one service. Another said, “I’ve never been in a church before and I’m glad I came.” Recently a third received an ovation from our guests for his testimony by reciting Psalm 116 by memory. After the service he was leaving for Florida to help hurricane victims. Yet another guest gave four of us each a $20 bill after the service. “This is for what you do here.” Mouths agape, we could say nothing and my $20 bill is framed in my study. The most memorable story was a regular who said that he’d be dead if it weren’t for this service. Today he is now housed, employed, sober, and a member of FUMC.
I leave that service feeling I’ve received much more than I have given. Yes, Feed My People worship is a blessing…to our guests…and to us servants.
