Isabel Wilkerson won a Pulitzer Prize for her book The Warmth of Other Suns. While that book was important for the insight into what has been an ignored, if not hidden, part of our history, her follow up work is probably more important. Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents, at least on the surface, appears to be a discussion of race relations, but it is so much more than that. Wilkerson suggests that much of our frustration with each other has its base in a caste system that has been present and continually reshaped itself throughout our history. She further illuminates that history, comparing our system to that of India and Germany. Oprah Winfrey made this one of her book selections, and went further to say that it was one of the most important books she has read. While you might not agree with her ranking, it offers very helpful insights into our lives together.
Join retired Pastor John McMullen for study and discussion. The class will be presented in four sessions, and it will be important for the participants to read along.
