In support of Hunger and Homelessness Awareness, FUMC is hosting a food drive benefiting Caritas of Austin. Caritas of Austin’s Pantry provides food and hygiene items to the families and individuals transitioning out of crisis toward self-sufficiency. Food assistance is an important part of Caritas of Austin’s comprehensive services which also includes housing, job placement, and education classes focused on workforce development, life skills, and money management. Together, these services help us support thousands of community members move out of poverty and homelessness toward stability and success.
Hunger is an important issue in our community. In Travis County, nearly 20% of households are food insecure, meaning they lack consistent and reliable access to adequate, nutritious food. When you are struggling to make ends meet and must choose between putting food on the table and paying the electric bill, weekly groceries from the Caritas Pantry bring great relief to families toward stability.
We are collecting some of their most needed items throughout November:
- Canned chicken and salmon
- Dried beans (northern and black)
- Canned pineapple
- Canned fruit cocktail
- Small bottles of cooking oil
- Canned mixed vegetables
- Canned beets
- Canned garbanzo beans
- Canned chili, ravioli, and soups
- Shelf-stable milk
- Peanut Butter
Donations may be left in the collection bins located in the foyers of the Sanctuary, Chapel, and the Family Life Center.
