This service begins with the pageantry of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. All are given a palm to wave as we sing of how the people welcomed Jesus. Like the pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago in the film The Way, each person will also be given a small stone as a symbol of all the burdens we carry with us along life’s journey and from which we long to be free. Then, we will somberly walk with Jesus to the cross, as the story of Jesus’ passion from Luke’s gospel is dramatically read, interspersed with hymns, and we meditate on our stone. At the end of the service, each person will have the opportunity to place his or her rock at the foot of the cross, knowing that Jesus sets us free.
