We were nervous going into this one. Our stash was wiped out after our visit in December and we weren’t sure we would have enough to make it through all 38 classes.
The school was excited to see us. The school’s marquee thanked our church. Student after student presented us with sweet thank you cards — hand drawn and written. The kids had bags of quarters ready, and the reading specialist provided quarters for those who didn’t have any.
We sold over 1,500 books. Kids poured over the inventory to find the right book. One young girl, who had apparently lost library privileges because she had trouble keeping up with things, was particularly appreciative of the books she found.
Each book is sold for a quarter so students, parents, and teachers have a stake in the partnership. Every quarter collected goes into the FUMC account, which is dedicated to buying more books for our visits each December and May. But even with our latest purchases, we’re wiped out again and hope you’ll continue to donate books and funds for next school year. And please consider coming out to help us in this fulfilling work!
