At FUMC, we don’t have a separate worship time with the children. This is a very intentional choice. Children are a part of our church family and we share the responsibility for nurturing their spiritual needs. By welcoming them at our church’s most sacred moments, children learn that nothing can separate them from the love of God. By worshiping together with our children we pass on our traditions for praising God through the sacraments, music, proclaiming and hearing the good news, and offering our gifts and prayers.
We believe that it is important for parents to grow and be fed in their faith as well. For infants and toddlers, we know that parents can best worship when their children are safe and happily engaged in our childcare rooms. When children reach about four or five and are ready, we encourage parents to begin bringing their child to one of our many worship services on a regular basis.
- 9:00 am & 11:00 a.m.
- Holy Communion is celebrated every week at the 9:00 a.m. service and on the first Sunday of the month at the 11:00 a.m. service.
- 9:00 a.m. On the third Sunday of every month, a worship service is offered in our beautiful and intimate Murchison Chapel.
We embrace the premise that faith is “caught” not “taught,” and what better way for children to understand faith than to be a part of the worshiping community.
Time with Young Disciples
Children are encouraged to engage in our Young Disciples’ Time during the 11 a.m.
Sanctuary service. This is a great chance for children to get up, move around and be close to the minister, altar, and others in our congregation.
Worship activity bags are available with crayons and scriptural puzzle pages that provide quiet ways to focus energy for preschool and elementary age children, ages 3-11 years. These bags can be found in baskets by the front doors of both the Sanctuary and the Chapel. Children may use them during worship services and then return the crayons following the service. Also, a special worship notes page is available for children to take notes during the service and provides an opportunity to discuss with their parents what they learned that day.
For parents that wish to remain close to their infants and toddlers while still attending worship, a Family Room, equipped with sound from the service, is available behind the balcony. It is furnished with rocking chairs, toddler toys and a changing table.
Our childcare rooms are located on the first floor of our Education building, below the Murchison Chapel. Our paid staff is trained to give loving and professional care for children while parents enjoy church worship and activities. Childcare in our nursery is available starting at 9:00 a.m until 12:00 p.m. for infants through 5 years old.
Beginning at age 3 years through 5th grade, we offer an hour of guided Christian education, led by volunteer church members, on Sunday mornings from 9:45 – 10:45 a.m. Children are grouped by age and grade. Curriculum is selected to introduce age-appropriate Bible stories from both the Old and New Testaments. Children 6th – 12th grade participate in our Youth program in the Family Life Center.
First Church offers a monthly baptism class for parents who would like to have their infant welcomed into our congregation by this holy sacrament. Persons seeking baptism for their children need to attend a baptism class, led by the Reverend John Wright, in which the rich meaning of baptism is carefully explained–what God promises to us in this sacrament and what we promise to God. Participants will discuss the important commitment represented by baptism, the faith development of your child, and specifics of our children’s programs. In addition, families will be able to connect with others in our church who have young children. If your family has an infant baptism in the future, please contact Marilyn Good at firstname.lastname@example.org or 478-5684 (ext. 204) to reserve your space in this class.
