The Reconciling Ministries Network (RMN) recently launched the “It’s Time” campaign to enable supporters of full lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBTQ) inclusion to urge the General Conference to reverse The UMC’s discriminatory treatment and harmful language toward its LGBTQ ministers and congregants.
Over the last few years, FUMC has been a witness to suffering: the trials of Rev. Frank Schaefer for officiating his son’s same-sex wedding; LGBTQ candidates for ministry rejected from their calling; and growing numbers of clergy and congregations wary of telling fellow members that their marriages cannot be celebrated. These actions do not speak to our foundation of love and grace for the United Methodist Church. This is why, FUMC stands united to say “It’s time” for change to the delegates at General Conference 2016.
On May 1, 2016, the FUMC congregation united to support the RMN campaign by taking a group picture with the message “It’s Time” for change.
We believe in God’s love and God’s call for the church to welcome and respect all who come through our doors. The UMC motto is “Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors,” and we fully support and embrace this authentically and whole heartedly. All are welcome at FUMC, no exceptions.
The General Conference of The United Methodist Church will convene in Portland, Oregon on May 10-20. The global denomination will vote on whether or not the church will continue to discriminate against lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer individuals.
How Can You Help?
Praying for delegates, bishops, speakers, and all those who lead and attend the General Conference sessions is a powerful way to participate. Pray for God to guide the General Conference’s decisions, for Christ to lead us into the future, and for the Holy Spirit to empower us to go on toward perfection in our love of God and one another.
