An old man is walking along a beach and he sees at a distance a young boy, standing in shallow water up to his ankles, repeatedly pick something up out of the water and throw it out into the surf. Curious, the old man approaches the boy and asks him what he’s doing. “I’m saving starfish,” the boy proudly answers, “the tide is going out and if I don’t throw them out into deeper water they will get stranded on the hot sand and die.” Amused, the old man says: “Son, don’t you realize there are thousands and thousands of starfish up and down many miles of this beach? You can’t possibly make a difference!” The boy reaches down into the shallow water, picks up another starfish and flings it as far as he can out into the sea. He looks up at the old man with a wide smile and announces: “I made a difference to that one.”
The Mobile Loaves and Fishes’ Downtown Austin truck, based at FUMC, goes out nearly every day of the year (about 350 times last year) to provide meals, clothing and hygiene products to the homeless and working poor in our community. Last year, our Downtown truck provided over 26,000 hearty meals—along with thousands of smiles, warm handshakes, and hugs—to our neighbors in need, with the help of more than 350 dedicated volunteers serving in this labor of love. We don’t manage to feed all the hungry people in Austin, but we do make a difference to some folks! It will cost over $67,000 to fund this ministry for the next 365 days. You can help us with that. Like the little boy throwing starfish out into deeper water, you can make a difference!
Please give generously as we try to make a difference for our friends living on the streets of Austin during 2017! You may leave your gifts (marked “Mobile Loaves & Fishes”) at the communion rail or you may send it to or bring it by the church office.
